We have several models for developing an Blended Course “PBL for dummies” in our PBL9 group. See below.
We had the “ADDIE model”, “The community of Inquiry” and the “5 stage model of Gilly Salmon”. The last one was chosen by the group because of its simplicity.
Some people in the group started to say that they had information overload. They get lost in all the interesting stuff that is available. It is an 21st century to select your information and to accept that it is impossible to read everything.
Someone had already filled in the “Fish document” and had filled in “the 5 stage-model” of Gilly Salmon, while talking about the phases of this model, people get lost a bit and someone noticed: “what are our goals exactly…” What do our students have to know at the end?”, and “What do they have to do?” and “Which attitude is expected from them?”
So we started with the end. Stage 5 of “The 5 stage-model”. In stage 5 there had to be some reflection (group member M), students have to present something (Group member G), there has to be a link with the goal in stage 5 (Group member F) and so on…
Now and then… we were lost in the discussion…together we always get back on track. Group members were adding each other with staying on track. I had to ask some questions and to give a small overview for meta-cognition on the process.
It was so great that all members of the group appear online. Not everyone stayed, but they all showed there face to say hello! M. Was in the train and send us his greetings, R. was doing a workshop in real life and he just said Hello… there were two children on board.. I felt so great that the family was nearly complete (we missed S.).
The next step was how to design collaboratively. M. was making the worksheet/template of “The 5 stage model”. F. was delivering a worksheet to M as an example. Then everyone should filling in one stage: with goals, e-tivities and resources.
There was a brainstorm how to present the course…
In 1,5 hour the group discussed “The 5 stage model” and the basic design of the course “PBL for dummies”. That is something to be proud of!
